Full Details
The new European Union Design Regulation (EUDR) took effect on May 1, 2025, representing the most significant overhaul of EU design protection law in decades.
For 3D printing hobbyists in Europe, the key changes are:
Enhanced exclusive rights for design holders means that printing objects whose design is protected under EU law without authorization is more clearly an infringement than before. This affects makers who download and print designs of consumer products, furniture, and other designed objects.
However, the regulation includes a "repair clause" that explicitly allows printing spare parts for personal repair use. This is a significant win for the right-to-repair movement and protects makers who print replacement parts for their own devices.
The regulation also introduces new protections for digital designs — meaning the CAD files and STL files themselves may now have clearer design protection in the EU.
