Full Details
Introduced by Senator Jack Reed (D-MA) on June 25, 2025, the 3D Printed Gun Safety Act of 2025 (S.2165) would amend federal firearms law to prohibit the online distribution of digital plans, blueprints, and instructions specifically designed for 3D printing functional firearms.
The bill was referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee and has not advanced further as of early 2026. A companion bill, H.R. 4143, was introduced simultaneously in the House by Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL).
The legislation targets the distribution of files — not the printers themselves — and would not affect hobbyists printing non-firearm objects. The key legal question is whether digital files constitute protected speech under the First Amendment, which has been the central debate in similar cases.
As of April 2026, neither bill has passed out of committee.
