Standard PLA: Complete Guide, Best Settings & Top Brands

Polylactic Acid (PLA) is the undisputed default material of 3D printing. Derived from renewable resources like corn starch or sugar cane, it is a biodegradable thermoplastic that is exceptionally easy to print. For the vast majority of decorative models, prototypes, and low-stress parts, PLA is the first and often only material you will need.

Key Properties

PLA is characterized by its stiffness and high surface quality. It holds fine details exceptionally well and is available in an enormous variety of colors and finishes (matte, silk, translucent, etc.). However, it is quite brittle; under stress, PLA will snap rather than bend. Its most significant limitation is low heat resistance. PLA begins to soften (glass transition temperature) around 50°C to 60°C, meaning parts left in a hot car or direct summer sunlight will warp and deform.

Ideal Use Cases

  • Prototypes: Rapid iteration of designs where structural strength is not the primary concern.
  • Decorative Models: Figurines, busts, and display pieces that require high detail.
  • Cosplay Props: Armor and accessories that will be painted and finished.
  • Storage and Organization: Bins, drawer dividers, and desk organizers for indoor use.

Nozzle & Bed Temp Ranges

Common Problems & Fixes

  • Stringing: Often caused by printing too hot or insufficient retraction. Fix: Lower nozzle temperature by 5°C increments and tune retraction distance and speed.
  • Poor First Layer Adhesion: Usually a leveling issue or a dirty bed. Fix: Clean the bed with isopropyl alcohol. Ensure the Z-offset provides a slight "squish" of the first layer.
  • Heat Creep: The filament softens before reaching the melt zone, causing a jam. Fix: Ensure the hotend cooling fan (not the part cooling fan) is working correctly and the ambient temperature isn't too high.
