Resin Printing Supplies: The Checklist You Actually Need
Getting into resin printing? The gear list can feel overwhelming. After nearly two years of printing everything from miniatures to functional parts, I've learned what you actually need versus what marketing says you need. This isn't about having every gadget—it's about staying safe and getting consistent results without breaking the bank.
Essential Safety Equipment (Non-Negotiable)
Respiratory Protection
The biggest mistake new resin users make is assuming "no strong smell" means safe air. Many concerning compounds in photopolymer resins are odorless or masked by the resin's own scent. A proper respirator isn't optional equipment—it's your lungs we're talking about.
You need a half-face respirator with Organic Vapor cartridges. The 3M 6200 series is the standard, running about $40 for the mask plus $20 per pair of cartridges. Test the seal by inhaling with cartridges blocked—if you feel suction, the seal is good. Beards and wrong sizing give false confidence.
Surgical masks and N95s don't work against resin vapors. They filter particles, not volatile organic compounds.
Hand Protection
5+ mil nitrile gloves are required, not the thin 3 mil food-prep gloves. Uncured resin permeates thin gloves within 30-60 minutes. Nitrile gloves are highly resistant to chemicals and prevent skin allergies from sticky resin.
Buy industrial-grade 5 mil or 8 mil nitrile in 100-count boxes. Don't substitute latex—it's not chemical resistant enough.
Eye Protection
Chemical splash safety glasses are non-negotiable because uncured resin in the eye is a medical issue. Look for ANSI Z87.1 rated glasses with "U6" UV rating markings. Most chemical-splash glasses include UV protection, which you'll need if you're using open-style curing stations.
Cleaning and Processing Supplies
Isopropyl Alcohol
90% or higher concentration IPA is the standard for removing resin residue efficiently. Buy it by the gallon and decant into smaller squeeze bottles for daily use. Keep the main supply in the sealed bottle and never pour spent IPA down the drain.
Denatured alcohol works as a backup when IPA is scarce or costly, though 90%+ IPA remains the benchmark for consistent results.
Cleaning Containers
You need two sealable containers with lids for dirty and clean IPA baths. Glass or plastic work fine, but they must have tight-fitting lids to prevent evaporation and contain fumes.
Workspace Protection
A silicone mat catches drips and keeps your workspace clean. When resin spills on the mat, expose it to sunlight to cure the resin solid, then bend the mat so cured pieces pop out.
Cleaning Tools
A spray bottle filled with IPA works well for delicate or intricate prints. Soft brushes or toothbrushes clear detail areas and blocked channels.
Paper towels work for pre-wiping excess resin, though reusable cleaning cloths are more environmentally friendly. Clean any cloth with IPA before next use.
Support Removal and Finishing Tools
Sharp cutting pliers let you carefully snip off support structures without damaging print surfaces. Breaking supports by hand often leaves marks or tears.
A plastic scraper helps remove prints from the build plate without gouging. Metal scrapers work but require more care around your FEP film.
Printer Maintenance Supplies
FEP Film Replacement
FEP film is consumable—expect to replace it every few months depending on use. Keep spare sheets on hand because a punctured FEP means downtime. Check current retail prices as costs fluctuate.
Vat Cleaning
A funnel with integrated strainer filters lumpy resin when transferring between vats. This prevents contamination that ruins the next print.
Waste Management
Hazardous Waste Container
You need a sealed container for uncured resin waste: used FEP films, contaminated towels, and gloves. A 1-gallon screw-top plastic jar works well. Label it clearly and take it to hazardous waste collection when full.
Ventilation Requirements
External ducted exhaust is the standard for resin printing, not an upgrade. An unvented enclosure with only internal carbon filtering is worse than printing in an open ventilated room—it concentrates fumes during printing then releases a high-concentration burst when you open the door.
The correct setup routes a fan and ducting to outside through a window or permanent vent.
Optional Upgrades
Wash and Cure Station
Most manufacturers offer dedicated wash/cure stations that automate the cleaning process. They're convenient but not essential—you can achieve the same results with manual methods.
Ultrasonic Cleaner
Ultrasonic cleaners at 30-50°C work well for detailed models. Never put flammable alcohol directly in the tank—use a glass container inside the water bath.
What You Don't Need (Yet)
Skip the exotic solvents, expensive wash stations, and specialized tools until you've mastered the basics. Many "essential" accessories are solving problems you don't have yet.
Focus your initial budget on safety equipment, basic cleaning supplies, and workspace setup. You can always upgrade specific tools as you identify actual bottlenecks in your workflow.
The Reality Check
Quality resin printing adds $150-300 to your first-month costs beyond the printer itself. That's not marketing fluff—it's the real cost of doing this safely and getting consistent results.
The good news? Most supplies last months. Once you're set up, the ongoing costs are just resin, occasional FEP replacement, and IPA refills. But cutting corners on the initial safety setup isn't worth the risk to your health or the frustration of failed prints.
