Best Uses for Resin 3D Printing: Miniatures, Jewelry, Dental,

Resin 3D printing is a specialized tool. If you buy a resin printer to manufacture heavy-duty shelving brackets, you will be disappointed by the brittle parts and the messy workflow. However, if you buy a resin printer to produce custom jewelry or tabletop miniatures, you will be astonished by the results.

Resin printing (SLA, DLP, and MSLA) excels in applications where extreme precision, smooth surface finishes, and microscopic detail are required. This guide explores the best use cases for resin 3D printing, the specific materials required for each, and the scenarios where resin is the wrong choice.

Why Resin Printing is Used for Detail

Unlike FDM printing, which extrudes melted plastic through a nozzle (typically 0.4mm wide), resin printing uses light to cure liquid polymer. A modern MSLA printer can cure pixels as small as 19 microns (0.019mm) across, with layer heights as thin as 0.01mm.

This allows resin printers to create textures that are virtually invisible to the naked eye, such as the weave of fabric on a miniature's cloak or the microscopic prongs on a jewelry setting.   • Why Resin Works: Dental appliances require absolute dimensional accuracy to fit a patient's mouth. High-end SLA and DLP printers provide the necessary precision.

  • Main Caution: Medical warning: You cannot use standard hobby resin for anything that goes inside a human mouth. Dental resins are highly regulated, Class I or Class II biocompatible materials.   • High-impact outdoor parts: Standard resin degrades and becomes extremely brittle with prolonged exposure to UV light (the sun).
  • Rapid iterative prototyping: If you need to print a part, test it, tweak the file, and reprint it within an hour, the messy wash-and-cure workflow of resin is too slow.
